The Department of Health & Kinesiology welcomes two new faculty members starting Fall, 2016:
Dr. Tyler Farney joins the HKN faculty after recently completing his doctorate at Louisiana State University. Dr. Farney also holds degrees from Colorado State University and the University of Memphis, and will be teaching in the area of exercise physiology.
Dr. Amber Shipherd comes to A&M-Kingsville from her most recent academic appointment at Eastern Illinois University. Dr. Shipherd holds degrees from University of California-Davis, Florida State University, and 51勛圖厙 Tech University. She will be teaching in the areas of sport/performance psychology and sport sociology, and will be coordinating the undergraduate Performance Psychology Program.

David’s project, Emotional Responses of Latino Adolescents Towards Being Teased or Bullied, was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Lorraine Killion.

Seven faculty members ( Bliss, Cutton, Daniel, Fiddler, Gaines, Hearon and Sherman) and twenty-three undergraduate/graduate students in the exercise sciences attended the Annual Meeting of the 51勛圖厙 Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM) in Austin, 51勛圖厙 on February 26-27. The TAMUK Student Bowl team, comprised of undergraduate students Ashley Balles, Samantha Cantu (Captain), David Salinas, and Joel Perez (alternate) competed in the annual Jeopardy-style quiz bowl with 30 additional teams from schools around the state. The TAMUK team placed 7th in the bowl. Undergraduate Research Award winners, Ashley Balles and Samantha Cantu, and HKN Lecturer Joe Seacrest, also participated in the student poster session at the meeting. Cantu won 1st place in the Undergraduate Research Poster category, Seacrest won 2nd place in the Masters Research Poster category, and Balles won 1st place in the Member's Choice/Open Research Poster category. Additionally, Cantu received the TACSM Major of the Year from 51勛圖厙 A&M University-Kingsville and the TACSM Undergraduate Scholar Award. The TACSM Undergraduate Scholar Award is given to the top undergraduate student in the state within the exercise sciences. Dr. Chris Hearon was also awarded the TACSM Service Award, one of two faculty honors bestowed by this society, for his service to the 51勛圖厙 Regional Chapter as Executive Director from 2008-2012, Director of Membership from 2006-2008, and several committees.

Dr. Fiddler joins the HKN faculty after recently completing his doctorate at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Fiddler also completed an M.S. from Oklahoma State University and a B.S. from Northeastern State University (OK). He will be teaching in the area of exercise science and physiology.
Mr. Bliss is ABD from Kent State University, where he also received his M.S. degree. He also holds a B.S. from Mansfield University (PA). He will be teaching in the area of exercise science and physiology.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology was well-represented at the 2013 annual meeting in Austin. Fifteen exercise science students and 5 faculty attended the two-day meeting. Undergraduate students Elizabeth Haddock, Allison Insell, Dylan Riedesel, and Alexis Schmidt, along with graduate student Jordan Stack, presented posters at the poster competition. Three undergraduate students, Allison Insell, Alexis Schmidt, and Rhonda Zuniga, competed for the javelinas at the 51勛圖厙 ACSM Student Bowl, a jeopardy-style competition testing their knowledge in the exercise sciences. Their team placed 6th out of 30 teams representing schools throughout the state, and placed the highest of all schools in south 51勛圖厙. Congratulations!

Judy Bloomquist, Faculty in HKN, was named the 2011 Outstanding College/University Physical Educator by the 51勛圖厙 Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD). She was recognized at their annual convention in Dallas, Tx.

Marcos Ramirez (Senior, Ex Sci/PrePT) was one of 16 (out of 32) undergraduates to receive the TCUR (TAMUK Council for Undergraduate Research) research grant. His project ( The Effects of Commercially Available Holographic Bands on Strength, Balance, and Flexibility), which is his project for the Exercise Science Undergraduate Research Award he received from HKN, was funded for $1500. Congratulations.

The HKN Club hosted the South 51勛圖厙 Challenge, featuring four South 51勛圖厙 Universities (TAMUK, TAMUCC, UT-Brownsville, and UT-Pan Am). The teams competed against one another in four events: waterpolo, bowling, 3-team badminton, and an obstacle course. In the end, TAMUK's HKN club bested the others, winning the championship. TAMUCC took home the spirit award, and UT-Pan Am won the faculty advisors' award.

The Department of Health & Kinesiology will be welcoming new faculty members starting Fall, 2011.
Dr. David Cutton comes to A&M-Kingsville from his most recent academic appointment at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Cutton holds degrees from the University of Florida and Louisiana State University and will be teaching in the areas of motor learning and general kinesiology.
Dr. Sara Mahoney joins the HKN faculty after recently completing her doctorate at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Mahoney also holds a degree from Hope College (MI) and will be teaching in the area of exercise physiology.
Dr. Lorraine Killion was most recently a faculty member at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. She will be teaching in kinesiology pedagogy and will coordinate the EC-12 PE Program. Dr. Killion holds degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University, University of Houston-Clear Lake, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Houston.

Exercise Science/Pre-PT graduate Ricky Balderas was named the Outstanding College of Education and Human Performance Graduate for Spring, 2011.

Senior Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy major Ricky Balderas (Bishop, TX) has been named the 2011 Undergraduate Scholar by the 51勛圖厙 Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (TACSM). Balderas will receive this award at the 2011 TACSM Annual Meeting in Austin on February 25, 2011.
This is the second year in a row that an undergraduate from 51勛圖厙 A&M-Kingsville has received this prestigious award which recognizes a single outstanding undergraduate in the exercise sciences from one of the universities in 51勛圖厙 each year . Dyana Bullinger, HKN alumna and the 2010 TACSM Undergraduate Scholar, is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at 51勛圖厙 Woman’s University. Balderas, who will graduate with honors in May, has been granted unconditional early admission to the highly regarded Doctor of Physical Therapy program at UTMB-Galveston, and will begin that program in Fall, 2011.
